Back in 2015, Xenoblade Chronicles X was a huge RPG that strayed away from the usual formula of the series. This Definitive Edition cleans up some of its shortcomings and lets a new generation of players experience it for the first time. Sunderfolk, the latest game from Dreamhaven and Secret Door, is a tabletop RPG where your phone is the controller and your screen is the TV. It’s one of the most fun multiplayer experiences I’ve had in years. Sandfall Interactive’s debut game is a masterclass in presentation, storytelling, and gameplay.

The studio behind This War of Mine returns with a base-building game about corporate greed and a whole lot of clones. It wouldn’t feel fair to put a star rating on a game that’s only just finding its feet and putting its boots on, but there’s enough here to get excited about. Also, crossplay hasn’t been added yet, which would really enhance the social aspect of the game. I do slightly wish there was a way to unlock skins or something similar that would let you represent your real-life team, because I do miss that connection to the real world, but I understand that would be an expensive licensing situation. And since it’s launched straight on Xbox Game Pass, here’s hoping that a decent amount of people give it a chance.
You also have to dodge unblockable attacks with the thumbsticks and physically duck under knife attacks. There’s certainly plenty going on – with more regularly opening up as you unlock new gadgets by progressing the story – to keep these fights and the optional standalone challenges interesting (and repeatable!). I don’t think Avowed’s combat could sustain my attention over the course of a linear, 15-hour action game, but as one of the main components in a story-led, exploration-rewarding RPG, it’s a lot more fun than I had dared hope for. We hold the Switch 2 in our hands with a sense of foreboding. Because of virtual game cards, the games you own are locked to a single system at a time. You can mitigate this by going into your account settings and turning on “Use Online License,” which lets you have games on two consoles at once. The problem is, two systems with the same account profile can’t play the game at the same time. Plus, your save data will remain tied to one system at a time—as we learned the hard way, moving a game save from one Switch to another deletes it off the original one instead of copying it over like how it works on every other game system.
Rematch also takes a novel approach to the goalkeeper position. Rather than having somebody stuck in nets all match, the keeper rotates after each goal scored, and you can even switch who’s playing the role anytime just by quickly swapping physical positions on the field. This can also lead to a clutch scenario when you sub into the keeper role just as your opposition unleashes a shot. The fact that I’m so far off my typical pace speaks to how increasingly underwhelming I’ve found EA’s sports juggernaut franchise. I’m a massive soccer (make that football for us Brits) fan, and the series has always been a staple of my gaming diet. To a T is less focused on giving you something to do with your arms, and more intent on telling a story.
It’s possible to just enter some public figure’s house, have a look around, open their chests and lockboxes, rob them of their coins, and the worst I’ll receive is a mild scolding.
